Bischoff, Wine Headline Early Games

Purdue's Matt Bischoff and Penn State's Cory Wine turned in big performances in Friday's early games. Bischoff, the Purdue righthander, fanned twelve over eight innings in leading the Boilermakers to a 4-1 win over Mississippi Valley State. En route to posting his first victory, the All-Big Ten performer gave up just four hits, two walks and one run. Kevin Cahill pitched the ninth to earn the save, his first. SS Nick Overmyer had two hits and two RBI. Drew Madia also had two hits.

Wine went a perfect 5 for 5 with 5 RBI in PSU's 12-8 win over Rutgers. Blake Lynd (who scored four times) and Bobby Jacobs (who scored three times) both had three hits for the Nittany Lions (7-6). Wes Borden had two hits, two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. T.J. Macy went five innings to post the win.

Michigan State's Eric Roof had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI in the Spartans' 7-3 triumph over Quinnipiac. (Which I consistently spell wrong.) Eli Boike and Chris Roberts also had two hits, but each scored and drove in one run a piece. Nolan Moody's your winner. The MSU starter worked six innings giving up seven hits, three walks and two runs (only one earned). Moody struck out five. Peter Wolff came out of the 'pen to pitch the final three frames and garnered a save.

These are the only three finals as of 6:15 p.m. EST. MSU and Quinnipiac are playing the second game of their twinbill as I type. There's no score in the bottom of the second.

Illinois has jumped out in front of Akron, 9-1. It's the bottom of the eighth in the Illini's home opener. Frosh Willie Argo has two hits and two RBI so far.

Northwestern leads Illinois-Chicago, 3-2, in the fifth. The Flames have put two on the board in this innings and are threatening to add more.

Pittsburgh leads Ohio State, 2-0, in the second.

(#25) Michigan takes on Arizona later this evening. The series between Minnesota and (#17) TCU has been made a Saturday - Monday series because of some lousy weather in the southern half of the nation.

I guess the Illini aren't letting themselves get caught up too much in last weekend's games: looks like they're taking care of business this weekend.

BTW: if anything, the Illini were overrepresented in last week's All-Weekend team. No complaints here of course. I'm sure its a little easier once conference games begin. :-)
