Still Penciled In As Hosts

Mark Etheridge at SEBasball.com continues to project Michigan hosting a NCAA Regional. This time his Ann Arbor visitors include California, South Carolina and Eastern Michigan. The Bears and Gamecocks would be fun and to have Ypsilanti's own Eagles take the five minute drive would be interesting especially with ex-Michigan assistant coach Jake Boss at the helm of EMU.

It's bad enough Ypsi invades the Ann Arbor bars during the summer. Now their trying to invade our ballparks? Oh the humanity!

Do we know who the projected starters are for Wednesday/Thursday yet? I can't figure out if OSU will start Shuck on 3 days rest or if they will go with Hale in Game 1.

One of my kid's camp counselors plays for the Eagles, so for us it will be fun if the prediction is correct. We root for UM to win, and for EMU not to get humiliated (that didn't work so well earlier this year with the 20-5 blowout).

According to Buckeye propaganda, it is yet to be decided who will pitch:

Commenters on the Buckeye Nine website linked on the right have many opinions on how the rotation should go.

Breaking news: Michigan sweeps the Big Ten awards. Recknagel Player of the Year, Putnam Pitcher of the Year, Maloney Coach of the Year.

From the Ann Arbor News

Chuck, the real breaking news: how Chris Fetter got screwed out of Pitcher of the Year by Maloney over promoting Putnam. Fetter leads almost every category in pitching.

formerlyanonymous said...

That is ridiculous.

Here's what the Big Ten release says about Putnam:

"Putnam, who is also a first-team honoree at designated hitter and a unanimous selection for first-team All-Big Ten pitcher, closed out the conference season ranking second in ERA (2.20) opponents' batting average (.211) strikeouts (46) and wins (6), making him the only pitcher to rank in the top three in each of those categories."

That seems like a selective group of stats there. Without looking, I'll go out on a limb and say Bashore and Fetter both whiffed on only one of those categories?

A couple of things come to mind...

1. I would imagine Hale will pitch Wed.I would like to see JB Shuck start, but i don't think Bob Todd will on 3 days rest.We can't really lose our first game.

2. Fetter did get screwed for Pitcher of the Year.He was a stud on the mound all year.Too bad his own coach does not agree.

3. This is not a big deal to you guys, but i also think Justin Miller from Ohio State got the shaft too. He should be on the Big Ten conference teams somewhere.I know we just barely got into the Tourny and had a bad year. But Miller is a stud on the ball diamond.

4.Too bad i can't make it up till Thursday,i sure would like to watch those games Wednesday.I got a darn work thing i can't get away from.

Whoa, I totally missed the Miller omission as well. 1B was overloaded with talent this year. I really felt Goebbert probably should have been 3rd team (if he even beat out Miller).

Saw the Purdue baseball bus. Hopefully the current threatening clouds will blow past quick and we'll have blue skies for the tournament starting tomorrow.

NittanyBaseball said...

Looks like there will be clouds and intermittent showers tomorrow, but the showers shouldn't be too heavy. After that, high pressure builds in allowing skies to clear by Saturday. Clouds will linger Thursday and Friday, but it should be a bit warmer than it has been.

Other than the Buckeyes making a nice run in the Tourny.I would like to see a Michigan- Purdue match up. I myself think it would be a good game. Both clubs with good arms and plenty of power.

How are the Big 10 all-conference selections made? Does the coach nomimate players and then the coaches vote on the players or does the Big10 office just decide?
Also are only Big 10 stats used or are the overall stats used. There sure seems to be some guys that got passed over for these teams that had great numbers in Big 10 play but their overall numbers weren't quite as good!

Throwing this out here now to be embarrassed about later.

Game 1 Illinois W-Manson, L-Hale
Game 2 Indiana W-Bashore, L-Wanamaker
Game 3 Ohio State (Penn State eliminated) W-Shuck, L-Macy
Game 4 Purdue W-Bischoff L-Martin
Game 5 Michigan W-Fetters, L-Arnett
Game 6 Ohio State (Indiana eliminated) W-Wolosiansky, L-Tufts
Game 7 Illinois (Ohio State eliminated) W-Haig L-DeLucia
Game 8 Michigan W-Putnam L-Jansen
Game 9 Purdue W-Cook L-Shaw
Game 10 Michigan W-Katzman L-?

formerlyanonymous said...

Oh great decision by Todd to pitch DeLucia. Definitely best choice. Too bad that throws my whole bracket.

Unknown said...

DeLucia is giving up more walks and hits than Manson is, but the Buckeyes are hanging in there. Tied 2-2 top of the sixth.

formerlyanonymous said...

Home run Bodonna. Ill up 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th. I wasn't thrilled with using Wolosiansky. He's been arguably the best starter along with DeLucia down the stretch. Hopefully he won't have to labor too much more before he gets pulled/the game ends.

Unknown said...

Best pitched the eighth and his teammates turned a timely double play to keep the Illini from going up by two. OSU needs to generate a little offense here or they're off to the losers bracket.

formerlyanonymous said...

Illinois got that double play right back. 3-2 final.

Indiana is starting Arnett? Interesting choice. He did well against PSU in one relief appearance this season, but it was only 2 innings, 2 hits, 1K. I just don't understand not starting Bashore. His start against PSU wasn't great, but all three since he has been lights out.

Unknown said...

Looking bad for Arnett in the bottom of the fifth. PSU up 5-0, two outs and two on so if could get worse.

NittanyBaseball said...

Wanny pitched a gem today. Good to see PSU take care of business in the opening round. Hopefully they can score an upset over Purdue tomorrow.

A couple of thoughts...

1. Sure did not want to use Dean W today out of the pen.I don't like that at all.Not a great pitching choice today. I guess with 4 hits, you can't win anyway. Gee Wiz!

2. I also can not believe Bashmore did not start today for IU.Hale vs. Bashmore should be fun,i Hope.

3.Did any one go to the games today? Can you buy Tickets/pass's for all 3 games or what? Just wanted to know how that works. This is the 1st time i will see other games then Ohio State at the tourny.

I was there, BB33. However, I ordered my tickets for the week in advance and had to go to the will call window, so I have no idea how they sell them at the door.

I have to think they would let you purchase one for the rest of the tournament.
