Iowa beat Penn State in a seven inning pitcher's duel, 1-0. The Hawkeye's Casey O'Rourke, Scott Brune and Mike Schurz combined to pitch a shutout. O'Rourke (2-0), who missed all of last season due to cancer, pitched 4.2 innings allowing five hits and a walk. He also fanned five. Schurz worked the two innings and posted his fifth save.
Penn State's Craig Clark had another strong outing working six innings allowing only one run on four hits and four walks. Clark also struck out five, but took the loss.
Iowa CF Travis Sweet was 2 for 2. SS Jason White scored the lone run. Penn State's DH Rob Yodice and SS Scott Gaffney each had two hits a piece.
