Sunday: IU, Purdue Win

We don't have all the finals, but here's what's happened thus far this Easter Sunday.

Indiana's good season continues as the Hoosiers bounce IPFW, 4-2. Kipp Schutz homered and drove in two. Chris Hervey had two hits and two steals. Tyler Tufts (2-2) went seven innings to post the victory. Tufts gave up five hits, two walks and no earned runs. Tufts struck out five, as well. Chris Squires came on to earn his second save.

Purdue won the first of two against Western Illinois, 11-2. Drew Madia homered and drove in three. Ryne White homered, scored twice and had two RBI. Ben Wolgamot had three hits. Jon Moore also collected three hits. Connor Sestak went five innings to get his first win of 2008. Sestak allowed only two hits and three walks that resulted in a single earned run. Sestak fanned five.

The Boilers have just exploded for 12 runs in the fourth to lead WIU, 14-4, in game two.

Northwestern dropped both ends of a split doubleheader. Kansas outslugged the Wildcats, 12-11. KU catcher Buck Afenir drove in five on three hits including his third homer. NU's Jake Goebbert did one better, as he had four hits (and, yes, his third homer) and drove in six. Freshman 3B Chris Lashmet also went yard and had two RBI.

Dartmouth was one better than NU in game two, 6-5. Alas, I've got nothing to report on this game as of yet.

Lehigh dropped Penn State, 3-1. Lehigh broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth. Joe Ercolano had three hits and two RBI to lead Lehigh. Greg Angelo went eight innings holding the Nittany Lions to four hits and a run. Jordan Warncke got the final two outs for Lehigh. The Nittany Lions wasted another good outing from Mike Wanamaker. Wanamker went seven giving up five hits, three walks and a run. Ryan Boonie drove in the lone PSU run.

PSU is up in the second game, 2-0, in the second inning.

There's nothing to report from the Minnesota vs. South Dakota State contest as of yet.

The proposed twinbill between Oakland and Michigan State was postponed. Again. I'm not surprised as the snow remains on my lawn in spite of the sunshine. This game won't be played tomorrow, either, as OU returns to Ann Arbor to make up for last Wednesday postponement versus Michigan.

The field at Bill Davis is looking good. I think us in Columbus have been fortunate with our weather. Plenty of rain, and enough sun. Saw pictures of the Michigan home opener and wow, I have never seen a baseball game on grass as dead as that. Sure it doesn't effect the play, but it takes a bit away from the spring feeling.

Forecast for Columbus, Wednesday vs Pitt cloudy mid-50s, Friday rain low-50s, Saturday partly cloudy low-50s, Sunday sun low-50s.

Oh and my 6 to make the BT tourney, one last time before the season starts.

OSU
Mich
Minnesota
Illinois
Purdue
MSU

Penn State unfortunately doesn't follow up last years success, lost too much pitching.

Indiana is a year away and their youth will cost them games they should win.

Purdue has been slowly turning things around, with Bischoff leading the way. Ryne White will challenge for Big Ten POY.

MSU has potential, but for whatever reason I see them struggling but barely holding onto the 6th spot, Iowa will be right on their tail. MSU though has a few more studs than the Hawkeyes to get it done, mainly riding the arms of Cullen and Sorensen and the bats of Day, Gertsenberger.

OSU, Mich, and Minn I think will play as expected. Michigan's pitching will cost them, honestly see OSU going into AA and winning the series taking 3/4 finally. Also the schedule benefits the Bucks huge, play PSU and Minny early in the season. By the time the Michigan series comes in late May things will be worked out, and the weather not crappy like the last few series with them.

Michigan's bats should/will power them to many wins, not many pitchers I can see stopping them, outside of pitchers who have done it in the past like DeLucia and Hale.

Pitcher of the Year Dan DeLucia
Player of the Year Nate Recknagle

I love to see the trip to Ann Arbor in May.That is a fun trip if the weather is nice.I would be great to get 3/4 from the guys up north.
I think Michigan will be hurting on the mound other than Putnam and Fetter. They will score runs with any one in the Big Ten.

I think MSU might suprise some people. Day can flat out hit and their pitching will be decent.I might make that trip if the weather is good.

Minnesota is young too.I think they lost a bunch of guys to the draft. Mee,Lyons,Baran and Jost are big loses. Also like U-M don't know about their pitching staff holding up. They did lose Oslin, Johnson and Perinar too.But if anyone can get it together Coach Anderson can.

Can't wait to see some Big Ten baseball this weekend.

rockybuckeye, you are a man of courage for not backing off Purdue after their start.

They certainly have the team to make the top six, but I just can't pick them anymore. Everytime I like them, they go in the tank. As a favor to Boiler fans, I won't predict them in the conference tournament.

I like MSU, as well. I do think IU will get in despite their youth.

I agree that nearly everyone has pitching questions.

Those last couple of spots will come down to the final days of the season again this year.

Unfortunately, the baseball weather has not quite arrived this far north yet. Could be a bit dicey for ILL @ MSU and Iowa @ Michigan.

I also think the Hoosiers get the last spot over Purdue. Bashore is a stud on the hill and Crawford,Means and Phegley can swing the bats. They are young but talented.

IU also does not play Ohio State and gets Michigan at home. They do start out with Minnesota this weekend on the road. Maybe a schedule break. Too early to tell.

Yeah I know putting faith in Purdue is rough right now, but they still lead the Big Ten in pitching, and their bats are slowly coming to life. As a team they have jumped 30+ points in BA, moving out of the cellar and up from their dreadful .207.

Anyhow not to tease our friends up north but the weather, at least today, in Columbus was amazing. Sunny skies, 60 degree weather, felt great for the home season to start. Guys picked up a 9-1 win over Pitt.
